Combining the Show With a Lantern Boat
Both are evening events and they collide. Three ways to fit the Hoai river lanterns and the Memories Show into one Hoi An trip.

Why these two collide
Both experiences want the same slice of the evening. Lantern boats on the Hoai river run from roughly 16:00 until about 21:30, and their magic hour is 19:00 to 20:00 when the light has gone and the river is busiest. That is precisely the window in which you need to be crossing to Cồn Hến island and finding your seat for a 20:00 curtain. Meanwhile the show's own value proposition asks you to arrive at the park by 16:30 for the mini shows. Doing both properly in one evening is not impossible, but something gets compressed, and it is worth deciding in advance what.
The honest recommendation: use two evenings
If your Hoi An stay is two nights or longer, split them. The lantern boat is a twenty-minute experience embedded in a whole Ancient Town evening — walking the lit streets, the night market, dinner by the river — and rushing it to make a curtain wastes what makes it good. The show is a five-hour island commitment. Give each its own night and both improve. Remember that Tuesday is dark at the Memories Show, which makes Tuesday the obvious lantern night if your trip includes one. It is the single easiest scheduling decision on this page, and it costs you nothing.
If you only have one evening: lanterns first
This is the better of the two compressed options. Take the boat at around 17:30 to 18:00, when it is quieter and cheaper to get a boat immediately, release your lantern, then take a car to the island by about 19:30 — a ten-minute run — leaving time to find your seat before the 20:00 curtain. You lose the mini shows and most of the park, so consider whether the seat-only value stacks up. Boats are priced around 170,000 VND for one to three people and 220,000 VND for four to five, with paper lanterns at 5,000 to 10,000 VND each.
Doing lanterns afterwards is tight
In principle you walk out at 21:00, take a car to the Old Town and are on the water by 21:30. In practice you are fighting the exit crush described by verified visitors, plus the fact that lantern boats wind down around 21:30. You would be arriving as the last boats go out, in the dark, having to negotiate quickly. It can work, and the river is lovely and much quieter at that hour, but treat it as a bonus if the timings fall right rather than a plan. Do not promise it to children who will be disappointed if the boats have stopped.
Full moon changes the calculation
On the fourteenth day of each lunar month, Hoi An holds its Lantern Festival: the Ancient Town switches off its electric lighting and is lit by lanterns alone. It is free to attend and it is the best lantern night of the month by a distance. If your trip contains one, give that evening entirely to the Old Town and put the Memories Show on a different night — this is not a night to be on an island watching something else. Note that entering the Ancient Town's heritage sites requires the 120,000 VND town ticket, though the streets, the night market and the riverfront are free to walk.
