The lights go down over the Thu Bồn river and a kilometre of stage wakes up at once. A girl at a silk loom begins to tell you about a place four hundred years ago, and then five hundred people walk out of the dark — farmers, merchants, a princess going to her wedding, a woman waiting on a shore for a ship that trades all year. Boats move on real water. Whole streets of Faifo assemble themselves in front of you, the port where Japan and China and Europe once met at the edge of Vietnam. And in the last act, hundreds of ao dai fill the largest outdoor stage in the country, and four centuries land in a single image. Sixty minutes on an island, and Hoi An stops being a pretty old town and becomes a story you were briefly inside.

Hoi An Memories is an outdoor narrative spectacular staged on Cồn Hến, an island in the Thu Bồn river beside Hoi An's Ancient Town. The performance area covers 25,000 square metres and runs more than a kilometre end to end, facing an auditorium of roughly 3,300 seats. The cast is 500 strong. The operator holds a Vietnamese national record for the largest outdoor stage in the country — a national record, not a Guinness one, despite what several ticket resellers claim, and worth checking wherever you see that claim repeated.
Four centuries of Hoi An, in five acts
The show is chronological rather than abstract. It opens with a silk-weaving girl who returns across the acts as narrator, moves through the historical marriage of Princess Huyền Trân to the Cham king Chế Mân, then to the women who waited on shore through the trading seasons, then to Faifo — the port at its commercial peak, when Japanese, Chinese and European merchants filled it. The finale leaves history for modern Hoi An and the ao dai. Sixty minutes, no interval, roughly twelve minutes an act.
A park you are meant to arrive early for
The stage sits inside a larger complex, Hoi An Impression Theme Park, and the operator clearly intends the early evening to be part of the visit. There are reconstructed Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese villages, a trade quarter, a spirituality section and a programme of mini shows before the main performance. Arriving just as the show starts means paying for a park you never see. The show does not run on Tuesdays.

What day is the Hoi An Memories Show closed?
Tuesday. The operator's schedule lists the show every evening except Tuesday. If your only free evening in Hoi An falls on a Tuesday, plan an evening in the Ancient Town instead.
Does my show ticket include the theme park?
Yes. The bundle ticket combines Hoi An Impression Theme Park entry with the Memories Show, and the operator says a show ticket includes park admission. If you buy direct from the operator instead, check what your voucher covers before you travel.
How long does the show run and what time does it begin?
The operator's schedule lists the main performance from 8 pm to 9 pm, about 60 minutes in five acts, with one show a night. The listing suggests arriving 15 to 30 minutes early for your preferred seat, and the park's mini shows come before the main show. Some older pages list 7:30 pm; the operator's current schedule says 8 pm.
What happens if it rains?
The show is fully open-air. The operator's pages we read do not publish a rain policy, so check before you travel. Only VIP is described as fully covered; the operator states that HIGH is not covered, and it does not describe ECO as covered. The bundle ticket cancels free up to 24 hours before for a full refund.
Are ECO seats worth it?
Sometimes. ECO is the tier nearest the stage and the largest block, but it sits lower than HIGH and the operator does not describe it as covered. In dry weather it works well for seeing the performers up close. If the forecast is poor, or you want the broader view, HIGH or VIP is the better choice.
